Freight Transport Yerevan — Gyumri: Rates, Timing and Finding a Carrier

Yerevan — Gyumri is one of the busiest domestic freight corridors in Armenia. The capital and the country's second city sit 120 kilometres apart, and that distance can be covered both ways within a single working day. This fact alone shapes both the rates and the delivery times.

Route and driving time

The main route follows the M1 highway: Yerevan → Ashtarak → Talin → Maralik → Gyumri. The distance is roughly 120–126 km, and pure driving time for a loaded vehicle is 1.5–2 hours.

The alternative via Spitak (M3) is longer and rarely used, mainly when an intermediate drop in Lori province is involved.

In practice, the full door-to-door cycle — loading, driving, unloading — fits into 4–6 hours. Cargo handed over in the morning reaches Gyumri the same evening, and a separate express surcharge is usually unnecessary on this route.

Choosing the vehicle

TypeCapacitySuited for
Cargo vanup to 1 t / 6–10 m³Parcels, small orders, appliances
Light truck1.5–2 t / 9–16 m³Furniture, retail stock, building materials
Medium truck3–5 t / 20–35 m³Home relocations, pallets
Euro trailer20 t / 82–86 m³Wholesale consignments, manufacturing
RefrigeratedvariesFood, pharmaceuticals, flowers
Flatbed / long-loadvariesMetal, pipes, structural elements

The most common mistake is booking a vehicle "with room to spare." Ordering a 35 m³ box for a 12 m³ load means paying to transport air. Measure the volume in advance — length × width × height — and add 15–20% for irregularly shaped goods.

What determines the price

On domestic routes, rates are rarely a straight per-kilometre calculation. The real price depends on:

  • vehicle tonnage and volume — the primary factor;
  • loading and unloading method — tail lift, side access, upper floor without a lift;
  • need for loaders — a separate service, charged hourly or per person per trip;
  • waiting time — the first 1–2 hours are usually included, then hourly;
  • backhaul availability — the most important and least obvious factor.

The backhaul effect

Trucks run from Gyumri to Yerevan daily, carrying agricultural produce, building materials and manufacturing orders. A significant share of them return empty.

An empty run is a direct loss for the carrier: fuel, time and wear with no revenue against it. A driver already heading to Gyumri, or returning from it, will therefore take a partial load at 20–40% below the market rate. It is still income for them and a saving for you.

The whole challenge is finding that vehicle at the right moment.

How to find a carrier

Freight broker. You call, they source a truck and take a 15–30% commission. Convenient for regular shipments and where contractual liability matters; expensive for a one-off delivery.

Through contacts. Cheap and reliable, but it does not scale and depends on whether that specific driver happens to be free.

General classified sites. Free, but listings go stale, half are off-topic, and there is no way to verify a carrier's reliability.

A freight marketplace. You post a listing with route, cargo type and date, and carriers respond themselves. You see several offers and choose on price and rating, with no broker commission.

Busy Track works exactly on this principle within Armenia. Posting a listing is free, offers come directly from drivers, and ratings and reviews let you assess a carrier before committing.

What to check before departure

  • Cargo inventory — in writing, with quantities and condition notes. Photograph furniture and appliances before loading.
  • Liability for damage — agree in advance who covers breakage. For high-value goods, insurance is worth it.
  • Payment terms — cash on delivery, bank transfer, or a deposit. Settle this before the truck leaves.
  • Direct line to the driver — their number, not only the dispatcher's.
  • Address accessibility — narrow courtyards, low archways, restricted entry. A Euro trailer simply will not fit into some streets in central Gyumri.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send cargo without an escort? Yes, that is standard. You hand over the goods and the recipient meets the driver at the address. Agree on who pays and when.

What if my cargo is a single box? Look for a vehicle taking partial loads — booking a dedicated run for that volume is pointlessly expensive.

Does the route work in winter? Yes, the M1 is a trunk road and is cleared first. Heavy snowfall can cause delays, but extended closures on this stretch are practically unheard of.

Can I track the delivery? Through the marketplace you have the driver's direct contact — call and check. GPS tracking is rarely offered on domestic routes and is generally overkill for a two-hour trip.

Key points

  • Yerevan — Gyumri: 120 km, 1.5–2 hours' drive, same-day delivery is realistic.
  • Match the vehicle to actual volume rather than booking oversized.
  • A driver with a backhaul charges 20–40% below market.
  • Sourcing a carrier directly saves the broker's 15–30% commission.
